It was beautiful, sunny day in Cayucos, California. However, even the perfect weather couldn't improve the mood of one of the local residents as he gloomily walked across the sand. Surfboard in his hand, he stared out into the horizon, his natural blonde hair blowing in the wind. He then realized that he was the only person on the beach, which just made him feel worse. He felt so alone lately, ever since summer began. His parents had left him for a whole month to go visit relatives who lived a few states away. The poor surfer couldn't go with his parents because he had to take summer school classes.

"Fucking Econ...." He grumbled to himself.

The poor highschooler didn't even have any friends to help him with his loneliness. Besides his good looks and likeable personality, he was painfully shy and only had a few friends. And those few friends happened to be away on vacation, all at the same time. The surfer stared out into the ocean again, his mind getting lost in the waves.

"I guess it's good that I couldn't go with my parents," he thought, "because my relatives live far away from the coast. And it is summer, after all. It would be a shame if I missed all these waves."

The blonde boy dashed towards the water, his surfboard clutched tightly under his left arm. Once he reached a point where he could just barely stand, he climbed onto his board. He used his arms to paddle out until he was almost to the end of the pier. He sat up and waited, enjoying the feel of the gentle rocking of the water. He looked down into the green-ish grey water beneath him. He could barely see past his toes. The surfer always imagined what sea creatures were lurking below.

"A man-eating shark would be too rare," he thought, "but I bet there are some small sharks somewhere down there." The boy remembered the time when he was walking on the pier and saw a fisherman reel in a shark that was almost as big as his pet golden retriever. The thought gave him the chills, but it wasn't enough to make him head back to shore. He had been coming to this beach for his whole life, and he's seen nothing but seals, dolphins, and occasionally whales breaching in the far away horizon. Never in his whole life had he seen a shark in the wild, not even the classic triangle-shaped fin skimming the top of the water.

The surfer was tired of just sitting there, thinking, and decided it was time to catch some waves. He leaned forward to paddle with his arms, and flinched at what he saw. Right in front of his board, there was a curved arch of some animal diving underwater. It was a glossy, green color and sparkled in the light. The surfer's eyes grew wide as the creature finished descending, revealing large fins on the end of it's body.

"S-S-S-Shark!" The boy gasped. "But a green shark?" His eyes darted around frantically to see if the creature was gone. "Maybe its a large fish. Could it still be dangerous?" He thought, and considered bringing his feet out of the water and onto the board. Before he could make up his mind, a boy emerged from the water and rested his arms on the surfer's board. The surfer flinched as soon as his blue eyes met the younger boy's teal eyes. Judging by the younger boy's playful, relaxed smile, he hadn't noticed the mysterious sea creature that was somewhere in the area.

"Quick! Get on my board! There's a shark nearby!" The surfer exclaimed, reaching out his hand to help the random boy.

"A shark?" The boy asked, and looked at the surfer as if he had spoken in another language. "But I don't sense a shark around here."

        The Surfer grew instantly annoyed.

"Why would I lie about something like that? Hurry!" The surfer demanded, but he was too late. He saw the end of the tail emerge again, right behind the younger boy. The tail descended back under the water; the creature was probably diving lower to go after the boy's legs.

"Watch out!!" The surfer yelled, grabbing the boy from underneath his shoulders and lifting him out of the water. The surfer saw the creature again. It was right on the boy.

"Oh God..." The surfer gulped, assuming the worst. But wait, there was no head. A headless creature? The surfer froze. His face began to lose color. The creature... was attached to this boy. It was a part of him.

"What is this...." He said outloud.

"Ow... can you put me down? You're hurting my arms..." The freakish boy asked, his face scrunched-up in pain. Before he could let the boy go, the surfer lost his balance and fell off the surfboard, taking the bizarre boy with him. The surfer was still in shock as he sunk lower and lower. The realization that he was going to drown finally hit him and he began to panic, but he was still in too much shock to be able to figure out which way to swim.

"Which way is... the surface....?" The surfer tried to think. He couldn't decide which was up, and which was down; and he was starting to lose air. Just as everything started to grow dark, he felt a tug on his arm. For a split second, he was afraid that a shark had gotten his arm, but then he lost consciousness.

The surfer opened his eyes to see a blinding blue sky above him. He squinted his eyes and raised a hand to his face to block the sun. His eyes then met teal. It was the boy again. The surfer sat up in a quick jolt, but then had a terrible coughing fit.

"Oh my... please, lay back down. I think you almost died," The strange boy said. The surfer managed to open his eyes again and got to see the boy's full body. Now that they were both on land, it was much easier to see. The boy was using his arms to help support his upper body so that he could sit up, but the rest of his body, his tail, was laying there. His body and his tail were combined at his waist; a smooth transition between skin and scales.

"What are you?" The surfer asked.

"My name is Cyan." The boy answered.

"My name is Skye--- wait, I asked what you were."

"You don't know? But I thought humans were fascinated with us..." Cyan brushed sand off of his fish tail. Skye stared at his blue nails which glistened like pearls.

"I'm sorry for surprising you like that. I just wanted to see your expression when I snuck up on you. I once heard that humans aren't such good swimmers, so something like sneaking up on someone while in the water would be a difficult task. And I was right! Priceless expression!" Cyan laughed. Skye continued to stare at him in disbelief.

"Are you going to keep staring at me like that? You should be glad I'm not staring at you like that. This is my first time talking with a human, you know." Cyan complained.

"You mean... you don't do this often?" Skye managed to say.

"Well, I've been on land before, that's all. But once I saw someone zoning out like that, I couldn't resist!" Cyan blushed, and scratched his head sheepishly.

"H-How do I know that you're not in a costume?" Skye asked. He hoped it was a costume. He wouldn't be mad if it was all just a prank. He would laugh, and then his life would go on as if nothing had happened.

"Costume? You mean, as in a disguise? I'm not sure how talented you humans are when it comes to making things like that," Cyan flopped his tail closer to Skye, causing him to flinch and raise his arms up in an unneccessary attempt to protect himself, "But if it helps, you can examine me."

Skye gulped and raised a hesitant, shaking hand. He slowly brought his hand over to the glossy fish tail, paused for a minute right before contact, and eventually brought his hand down onto the scales. He gasped. Skye has handled fish a few times in his life; once while fishing with his grandfather, and other times while preparing a meal. It felt just the same.

"Why would someone put so much detail into a prank?" Skye thought as he trailed his hand up the tail, up to Cyan's slim waist. Skye's hand trailed smoothly from scales to skin.

"There's no way that he just slipped this on... it's really a part of him. This... this is real." Skye thought and brought a hand to his mouth in awe. Cyan blushed again.

"May I... May I have a turn?" Cyan asked as he fidgeted with his hands nervously. Skye just stared at him, not realizing what he meant.

"You see, I've never seen legs up close before..." Cyan stared at Skye's legs as if he were a dog staring at a brand new chew toy. Skye blinked a few times until he finally realized what Cyan wanted. The shock of meeting a merman made Skye rather slow. Skye lifted his leg up towards Cyan, which he found to be very awkward to present his leg to someone. Cyan clasped Skye's ankle and stared at the souls of his foot and eventually brought his eyes to his five toes.

"Do each of them serve a purpose? What happens if you lose one?" Cyan asked, but before Skye could answer, Cyan suddenly pulled his leg up high, causing Skye to fall onto his back onto the sand.

"Wow, there are little fine hairs!" Cyan gasped. "Just like the ones on my arms!" His eyes were so close to Cyan's skin and his eyes were so intense that he somewhat resembled a detective looking for clues at a crime scene. Skye tried to sit back up, but Cyan yanked his other leg in the air, causing him to fall back down.

"They're symmetrical!" Cyan said, his voice full of wonder as he looked back and forth between the right and left legs. Skye just laid there in the sand, staring up at the sky, still wondering if he was dreaming or not. Cyan dropped the legs and trailed his hands up them until he reached Skye's Hawaiian print swim shorts.

"Humans are so weird, that they have to force themselves to wear clothes," Cyan brought his hands to the top of his shorts, "I wonder why? What are they hiding--" Cyan paused his sentence, for he had yanked down Skye's shorts in one quick tug, causing Skye to freak out.

"W-W-What are you--- I only said you can look at my legs!!" Skye panicked as Cyan continued to stare at Skye's exposed area.

"So that's what it looks like," Cyan responded, as if it were nothing. He lowered his head.

"C-Cut it out!" Skye said as he grabbed the merman's head with both his hands, pushing him back. Cyan paused and looked up at him, blinking in confusion.

"You... You can't look there, alright?" Skye said as he tried to calm himself down.

"Why? What's wrong with it?" Cyan asked, and brought his hand to Skye's member. Skye let out a girlish scream and leapt onto his feet, and pulled his shorts back up.

"Thi-This is too weird!" Skye said as he began to walk away. Cyan leapt at him, grabbing his legs. Skye nearly fell over.

"Don't go! I don't know what I did... But I'm sorry!" Cyan cried. Skye struggled to get loose from Cyan's arms, but the merman had a firm grip. Skye atleast was able to slowly walk forward, dragging Cyan behind him.

"Its just too strange! Me, talking with a mermaid...." Skye said as he stumbled forward.

"Merman!" Cyan corrected. "Please! I don't want to be on this beach by myself! Take me with you! I want to explore this world!" But Skye was stubborn and continued to walk forward while trying to shake the merman off. The merman inched his way up Skye's body, so that he was now hugging Skye's waist instead of his legs.

"Please, Skye!" Cyan begged. Skye paused. A merman, a fantasy creature, had just said his name. For some reason, Skye thought it had a nice ring to it when Cyan said it. Skye looked down at the arms across his stomach that were now locked in a powerful death grip. The surfer sighed.

"How could I even take you with me?" Skye asked.

"Not sure... I would need to be carried though." Cyan mumbled into Skye's back. Skye paused and thought for a moment.

"For awhile I thought you were in a costume, remember? If I carry you home and act casual, people will just assume its a costume. Think about it, if someone found a mermaid, they would go to great lengths to hide it. So if you're out in the open, people will think we're just two teen-age boys goofing around with monster make-up." Skye said. Cyan didn't respond right away.

"That... just might work." Cyan finally answered.

"Alright then. Want to give it a shot?"

         "Sure!"

"..... You're going to have to let go of me first."

"Promise you won't take off running as soon as I let go?" Cyan asked, and Skye chuckled.

       "I promise."

Cyan slowly slid his arms off of Skye. The surfer turned around and smiled down at the merman. Cyan smiled back for he felt happy that Skye didn't sprint away.

"Okay, I hope you're not heavy..." Skye said as he scooped the merman into his arms.

So sorry but I'm on a new computer and I haven't figured out how to do spellcheck yet so if they're mistakes I'm sorryyy~~~
Also, don't take this story seriously XD
I mean, its a romance that involves a merman, OF COURSE its not to be taken seriously haha

At first, I didn't want to write a story about these characters...
Since I haven't attempted to write a novel since I was elementary school, I don't have confidence in my writing ability.
Recently, all I've written (besides for school) were fanfics and scripts for my comics, which I didn't care if they were perfect or not.
But that was the only reason I was hesitant to write this. And also because I don't have enough time to make it into a comic. :/

BTW, someone else on deviantart offered to create a story with these characters... so be on the look-out for that when she finished ;D

(NEW POST: GAH. IT CHANGED MY FORMAT WHEN I UPLOADED IT) D:
(NEW NEW POST: OKAY, I TRIED TO FIX THE PARAGRAPH FORMATS AND WHATNOT.... STILL NOT PERFECT THOUGH, BUT I TRIED MY BEST GUYS) *smacks computer*
