Literature Text

Summer school had already begun for the day, but the teacher was running late, leaving all the students sitting in their desks, bored and nothing better to do. Skye, of course, never looked forward to summer school, but now that he had company waiting for him at home, he hated it even more. People were chatting with their neighbors, but Skye simply waited gloomily in his desk. He happened to glance over at the boy sitting next to him.

It was Asher, a quiet boy. He was completely lost in a book, he only paused once to adjust his thick-lensed glasses. It was the book that caught Skye's attention.

"Mystical Creatures," was written across the book, and also featured an image of a muscular troll of some sort that looked like it belonged in a fantasy video game. Skye wasn't surprised that Asher was reading something like that. Skye didn't know the guy too well, but he knew enough that he was the kind of guy who was interested in comic books and video games, basically anything revolving around fantasy. Skye usually preferred having shy, quiet people like him as friends, but he never got around to attempting to be Asher's friend.

"If it wasn't for all the assholes he hangs out with..." Skye thought. "He and I would probably be friends. Its hard to believe that he actually gets along with those creeps."

Then, without really thinking about it first, Skye decided to ask a question.

"Hey, Asher..." Skye began. Asher looked up from his book, his expression didn't even change.

"Do you have any books about mermaids?" Skye asked, surprising himself. Asher raised an eyebrow.

"Wait... what am I saying?" Skye thought. He quickly thought up an excuse.

"You see... my friend and I are working on a new fantasy book and it will have mermaids in it at some point, and we just want to get our 'facts' straight, you know..." Skye explained.

"Why am I asking him this? I could have simply looked it up online." Skye thought. Asher continued to stare at him, his fantasy book still in his hands.

"I guess deep down I just wanted to at least TRY and be friends with him..." Skye realized.

"I do." Asher finally answered. Skye blinked a few times in surprise. For a minute he thought that Asher would just ignore him.

"Ah, you do? Can I borrow it from you sometime?" Skye asked with a large smile on his face.

"Sure. I actually have quite a lot. I'll gather them up some time so you can read them." Asher said, and then continued to read his book.

"T-Thank you!" Skye answered. At that point, the teacher finally entered the room. She casually walked to her desk as if she were early this whole time. Skye then brought his attention to the lesson, feeling proud of himself for somewhat getting past his shyness, if only a bit.

Cyan was still swimming laps in the pool when Skye came back home. Once he spotted Skye walking through the sliding glass doors from the house to the backyard, Cyan eagerly swam to the edge of the pool to greet him. He crossed his arms on the pool wall and rested his head on them as he smiled up at Skye. The blonde had removed his shoes when he had entered the house so he sat down next to where Cyan was and let his feet dangle in the water.

Skye glanced from one end of the pool to the other. It was a large pool, typical for a backyard, but Skye still felt bad that that was all he had to offer for Cyan.

"Do you miss the ocean?" Skye asked bluntly.

Cyan tilted his head to the side.

"I do. But its just right over there," Cyan gestured towards the direction of the beach.

"But you can't swim at the beach, or people will see you," Skye said, his face showed his obvious concern.

"Then we'll just go at night," Cyan said as if it were the simplest thing.

Skye paused to think. He'd never swam at night in the ocean before.

"Is it even safe?" he thought, "It would be cold, even colder than it is during the day, and I couldn't even see anything...."

"If you're with me, you'll be safe." Cyan said as if he had read Skye's mind. Skye paused to think yet again.

"What's there to lose?" he thought, "If its too cold, well, I have that old wet suit."

"Okay, we'll go tonight." Skye decided. Cyan beamed and swished his tail back and forth.
Seeing Cyan's face, he wished he had thought of this sooner.

Then, out of nowhere, there was a loud 'thud' noise. It was the sound of multiple objects hitting the floor, and it came from somewhere close. Skye turned to look behind him and there was Asher, standing in front of the open backyard gate. At his feet were several books.
Skye's eyes grew wide, and he glanced down at Cyan, who's face was similar. Asher wasn't saying anything, he just had his typical expressionless face. Skye took advantage of Asher's silence to say the first word.

"A-Ah, Asher, I-I didn't know you knew where I lived... Thanks for bringing over the books!" Skye broke the silence, and let out a bit of nervous laughter. Asher still wasn't talking. Cyan gulped nervously, his eyes switching back and forth from Skye and the intruder.

"M-My friend and I decided that we're going to make our book into a home movie! We know this girl that's really good at sewing and stuff... and she made us this really cool mermaid tail!" Skye let out even more nervous laughter.

"Isn't that right---" Before Skye could finish what he was saying, he realized that the name Cyan was too odd, "--right, C-Carl?"

Cyan shot a quick, confused look at Skye, but quickly caught on.

"Yeah! Its kind of itchy though!" Cyan laughed nervously too. The two of them waited for Asher to say something.

"I see." He finally said and adjusted his glasses. He then scooped up the books into his arms and walked over to Skye.

"Here you are. Return them whenever," he said and handed Skye the books. Skye was so much in shock that he was quivering, and he tried his best not to drop the books.

"Good luck with your movie." Asher said, and then he was gone.

Skye and Cyan sat there in silence as they processed what had just happened. Cyan eventually broke the silence with laughter. Skye, on the other hand, was trying his best to hold back tears.

By the time night came, they had both eventually calmed down. Skye found his old wet suit in the storage shed and was pleased to find that it still fit him. It used to be large on him, and now it fit him perfectly. Wet suits couldn't entirely block out the cold, but they were certainly better than plain swim trunks. Also, since Skye was an experienced surfer, he slowly became used to the cold water of the California beaches.

Once Skye put on his black wet suit, Cyan giggled at him, saying he resembled a seal.

"Thanks," Skye answered sarcastically, "so I'll just be attracting sharks then."

"Don't worry. If there's anything out there nearby, I'll know." Cyan said and ended it with a cocky wink.

The two made their way to the beach. Skye insisted that they left late at night, even if it meant that it would be darker. Once they reached the water, Skye looked out into the ocean. He could still see the waves, but the darkness still blurred them. Cyan walked right in as if the water was pre-heated. Skye shivered just looking at him, but followed behind him, slowly.

After awhile, Skye and Cyan had made it far enough where Skye could barely stand. Skye's chin chattered gently from the cold. Cyan turned to face Skye.

"You don't have to tread water, just hold onto me," Cyan offered.

"Won't I weigh you down?" Skye asked.

"You won't. I'm a good enough swimmer, trust me."

Skye clung to Cyan and stopped treading water, and they stayed in place and didn't start to sink.

"It feels weird clinging to him like this," Skye thought, as he rested his head on Cyan's chest, "since he's so much smaller than me."

Cyan wrapped his arms around Skye's shoulders lovingly, pulling him as close as possible. He rested his head on top of Skye's. The young blond closed his eyes and lost himself in the moment, temporarily forgetting how icy cold the water was. He felt their bodies sway to the movement of the water as they were locked in their embrace. He could hear Cyan's heart beat, the sound of the distance waves hitting the shore.... Skye couldn't remember the last time he felt so at peace.

And then he found himself under water. He and Cyan had been knocked over by a wave, and were now doing somersaults under water. They eventually rolled up onto the shore and immediately started cracking up laughing.
